The fuel trail at Groom Lake is something I too have considered in the past. But that could prove somewhat difficult to verify or track down. Though what isn't, right? We know that in the mid 80's, 1986 off the top of my head, Hangar 18 was built. We also know that during this time period new water tanks were installed, Runway 14/32 was extended roughly 4,600 feet, and a new fuel storage farm was set up at the southern end of the facility. In 1987 Congress approved the withdrawal of the Groom Mountains. What does all this mean? I'm not really sure. But to the naked eye it seems like something big was happening. Possibly something huge. All I'm saying is that the timeline fits the speculation that a high-speed, exotically fueled aircraft could have indeed at least been in the testing stages. But that's just one theory out of many possible realities.
