While to most of us the word casket immediately means a container to bury someone in the actual definition is much broader. By definition a casket is nothing more than a container to hold something. I've heard people call a jewelry box a casket and many years ago when I worked for Kodak we stored master rolls of film in caskets. I would say it's very possible that the military uses the term for containers that store other items.
