Having spent some time as "Forward Observer" for the Army in Ft. Hood TX (1967), I can confirm that having a viewing site to a bombing range, or "impact area" for military ordnance can be one hell of a light show. I mean . . . this is our taxpayer money. We may as well get to see what we're spending it on. (I got to see a lot of Napalm drops, artillery, air-strikes.) Fire missions are fun to watch. Generally, the area is well marked, safe, and the military doesn't have much of a secrecy/security concern about civilian observation.
