Overall your theory sounds very believable, the one part that doesn't make a lot of sense to me is if they're using the existing airframe why would so much engine testing be required? The most obvious possibility would be that they're different engines, either for improved high altitude performance, better stealth characteristics and/or lower fuel consumption. Any of these options make good sense.

I wonder if maybe when the wings are shortened they might implement winglets?
