The area is full of Aux fields.......If you notice (on GoogleEarth)at area51, there is a WW2 left over field just to the east of the dry lake bed.....It's getting faint now but if you zoom down close you can make it out.........

Training bases all across the south and southwest would has Aux strips to do landings and touch/goes....

Gregos link is excellent for identifying a lot of those old/abandon/now gone airfields........
