How do you verify that tracking has occurred? For instance, when you find a transmitter, the acid test is to take off the antenna and see if you can still receive the signal, which means you are close to the source. What is the acid test for tracking a plane in this manner? Obviously seeing the leds light is not a valid test, since you don't really know if it was on target, only that a signal was detected. A TV camera that moved based on the tracking equipment might work, but you don't have enough degrees of freedom to make that work.

Often when tracking transmitters, you will track the 3rd harmonic of the signal, since the higher the freq, the less reflections you get from the terrain. So I can see how getting a microwave option would make this system work better.
