Interesting, they are USAF aircraft, but flow by contractors, not USAF pilots. I guess the ownership of an aircraft (or at least who holds the license) has little bearing on who flies it. During the Cuban Bay Of Pigs Invasion, pilots were recruited from the Alabama ANG to fly the A-26's (from Davis-Montham) for the CIA, and several were KIA. I found out recently a "civilian" C-47 was rigged with a minigun to be the fall-guy when some Sandinista MIG-21's were going to be blown up, after they were delievered by the Soviets. They were never delievered, so that plan was scrapped, but the routine use and ease of aquisition of surplus aircraft seems to be a consistent theme. Actally the watching of the comings and goings of Davis-Montham would be just as interesting as Groom.
