I was once by the highway chain link fence, near where the Pavehawks are, leaning against the fence with my hands resting in the mesh above my head. Security arrived and asked if I was trying to break into the base as they had a report that someone was attempting to break into the base. I told them I was too fat and far too old to do that!! besides down at the golf course end of the base there was a gap in the fence where anyone could walk through.
For early risers get up to the Hollywood Hills just after sun up, if you have a good scope or bins you can even get the serials on the main ramp.
In April 1997 I happened to be up there around 1100 when the SR-71 which had been in the 50th Anniversary static display departed, absolutely AWESOME, he did a few passes plus I managed some photos as well, one of my great aviation experiences.
