The MH47's carried the covering force that provided security to the compound during the raid. The force, similar to the Ranger mission in "Blackhawk Down" was an as yet undisclosed number of shooters outside the walls making sure that there was no counter-attack by locals or Pakistani military. The MH47's came in after the initial assault performed by the force carried by the LO and quiet choppers, one of which broke in half on landing with the tail boom OUTSIDE the walls. The choppers were launched from a Paki base so there was really no need for "stealth" to hide from the Pakis but the LO and quiet "stealth" choppers were needed to get a force quickly on the ground with out raising a rukus - which they did as evidenced by having the assault force keeping their presence unknown or at least confused to bin Laden so he could not flee, fight or blow himself up. The "stealth" choppers enabled the spec ops forces to land undetected and force an entry within seconds - yes they are that good and if they fast roped down to that nice flat roof, very possible. The Chinooks came in after the initial breach. There was nothing to hide from the Pakis as we fly around that area pretty regularly and since the HVT had already been taken out, it was a matter of just grabbing the intel and getting out. The question is why the botched demo job on the tail rotor; did they "forget" or run out of time? I'm sure some Master Chief was explaining that gaffe to Thor Olson within minutes of the pictures of the "never before seen" tail rotor sitting intact outside the wall. Too bad our nice Chinese trading partners got their hands on the tail rotor - we probably saved them another 500 billion in R&D!
