Sounds like you need to disable the proxy settings in your browser. This is done differently in each browser version. The most common are:

Netscape 4.x:
Edit Menu->Preferences...->Advanced->Proxies
Make sure that "Direct Connection to the Internet" is checked

MSIE 5.x:
Tools Menu->Internet Options...->Connections tab->LAN Settings
Make sure that "Use a proxy server" is NOT checked
