Of course the remaining communist nations are largely poor. China has liberalized it's economy a great deal and is succeeding at becoming a modern nation - it is still run by the Communist Party though it now accepts Capitalist as members. The reason that communism doesn't work is that it is ideologically driven and not reality compliant. It is a nice sounding idea that always fails. The situation of the USA right now is ideology driven and not reality compliant. The Defense Budget is of all discretionary spending. That does not include the Department of Veteran's Affairs (which provides socialized medicine for veterans), the Energy Department (a large portion of it's budget supports DoD missions), and the Department of Homeland Security. We cannot balance the budget by cutting all non-DoD spending. Which is to say most of what Government does. We could not balance it by eliminated the DoD. We would have to cut virtually ALL discretionary spending to balance the budget. Trumping up a phony war scare will not solve this basic problem.
