We live an hour from 99 and it's in good shape. 58 through Tehachapi is fine and the trip to Edwarsd is worth seeing. As long as your heading East, you should make it to Rachel in Nevada. Also worth the diversion. A couple of times a month the SCCA has an autocross at Castle. The link has galleries of Blackbird Airpark, Open cocpit day at Castle museum and our visits to Nevada.
