Definitely sounds like a refueling group...Low altitude?...Then it could have been a KC-130 and a gaggle of helo's....Perhaps "heavy helos" like the CH-53E Super Stallion or CH-53D Sea Stallions.......

Or a USAF KC-135/KC-10 refueling A-10's Warthogs.....
