The purpose of A51 and the many other similar research and development centers in the U.S. and around the world is to build weapons systems both offensive and defensive that are ahead of the current technology. The reason for this is so that we have the capacity to stop an attack quickly and completely and as a result minimize the casualties. Our enemies plan to use nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons of mass destruction. In Afghanistan our military is fighting against modern weapons provided by Iran, North Korea, and China. I recently visited a company that makes a hand held device that detects deadly substances. These are to be deployed around the world in defense of populated areas. The newest threat is warfare across the internet. Imagine discovering tomorrow that your bank account is gone, your credit cards no longer exist, and that there is no record of your existence. We will all celebrate the day there is no longer a need for places like A51 but if you read history you will see that going back to before the Ancient Greeks there was a need to constantly build and improve better more powerful weapons in order to survive as a society. This has been going on for thousands of years and not likely to end any time soon. I have to say that having seen U.S. military humanitarian aid in person that you are profoundly mistaken. But you are are free to think, believe, and speak as you wish.
