I'm not suggesting that you didn't hear/see what you heard/saw, but that contrail is no different from others that form under certain conditions.
I live in West London in the UK and can see dozens & dozens of contrails every day, sometimes maybe 20 in view at a time. Quite often they appear as shown in your pictures!
I'm sure that there is someone out there who can explain why they form.
