Most allied bomber units had a letter or symbol designation for each aircraft in the unit. The arrow was one such symbol, and letters were another. I only remember seeing pics of the Enola Gay with an arrow on the port side of the tail, and with an 'R' on the starboard side. Model aircraft kits of he aircraft are sold with the arrow symbol.

There is a picture linked here that supposedly shows the atomic bomb being uploaded to Enola Gay, with the 'R' symbol on the tail.

The aircraft departed Tinian Island in the Marianas on August 6 1945 at 3.00am local time, and dropped the first Atomic bomb on Hiroshima at 8.45am local time.
