Sorry for my late reply. MIT's Lincoln Lab has been at Groom Lake since 1957. Starting with their Project Rainbow for the U-2 program, under contract to the CIA (via the C&J Co. - read Skunk Works), Lincoln Lab (formerly known as the Radiation Lab) conducted several experiments on the U-2 to lower its radar detectability, under sub-projects known as Trapeze, Wallpaper, Iron Ball, and Sugar Scoop. After the U-2 program, they assisted in lowering the RCS of the A-12/SR-71, Tagboard, Have Blue, F-117 and other vehicles yet to be revealed. It is a bit funny, and ironic that it was Lincoln Lab that the USAF chose to debunk the mystery sonic booms recorded by USGS/Jim Mori. Lincoln Lab is not all that "independent" since it has the same status as a National Lab. It is like the police to ask the suspect to investigate himself. Also, the real official name of the airfield at Groom Lake is called Watertown Federal Airfield. The name has always been the same. It is not an Air Force Base, though the USAF is there. It is no more an Air Force Base than Palmdale, Mojave, or Helendale.
