The F-84 or "Thunderthud" was an underpowered and runway-eating fighter-bomber that was also known as a "Lieutenant-eater" and "ground hog." It just had this love affair with the ground and was terribly hard to get into the air, especially on hot days. No wonder the T-Birds quickly dumped the 84 in favor of the Hun that was capable of supersonic flight in the right conditions. Pilots I know that have flown the 84 really have nothing much good to say about it, but that it was an example of the poor first generation jet engines that barely could get the craft off the ground.
