I would agree with all the prior replies. Renting a car is the way to go.

As far as going alone, no worries there. Out in the Rachel area there isn't really too many reasons you'd need to be with anyone anyway, 'cept if you hit cow, which your co-pilot wouldn't be able to help with anyway.

GPS is almost a must have. You can find main gate and the Inn without it, but pretty much everywhere else is a hard find without.

Remember when you turn onto ET Highway you MUST have a full tank of gas, Rachel has no gas !!!

Check Nellis Flight Ops page on thier website to help plan your trip out there.

Check the NOTAMs also. I know first hand how depressing it is when you go to Rachel without any idea of where and when planes are flying, it's a very desolate location, but beautiful none-the-less.

Not sure what you are into, but in short distance from Area 51 are a few other neat spots to stop, those are listed here on DLR as well.
