For those that would like to watch the launch from the best possible vantage point outside of the base, try one of these two spots:
1) From Lompoc, drive west on W. Ocean Ave. (Hwy 246) to Renwick Avenue. Turn Right on Renwick and drive a block or two north, then park next to the road to watch the launch to your south.
2) From Lompoc, drive west on W. Ocean Ave. (Hwy 246) to Union Sugar Avenue. Turn Right on Union Sugar and drive a few blocks north, then park next to the road to watch the launch to your south.
I'm not sure whether or not the first location will be accessible or not due to the safety closure zone around the launch pad. That pad wasn't being used when I lived there in the early 90's, so I've included the second location as an alternate if the first is closed. Both viewing locations offer a direct line of sight view of the launch pad (Space Launch Complex 3 East).
