The road past the 22.0 mile mark in our directions (see attached) is so washed out that even a 4x4 Jeep would not do you much good. Up to that fork a mid-size SUV should do fine. There are some sandy spots. Just coast through them at a steady speed, and even a 2WD should be fine. Dosclaimer: I did not say that, and if you get stuck you are on your own... :-) A 1000mm lens should give you some decent photos. Most of the panoramas on this site were taken with a 2000mm equivalent lens mounted on a tripod.
