except for the color being orange it sounds like you are describing the Janet flights coming into the base from vegas. as someone that used to see many of the flares on parachutes while living near ft dix i can tell you the seem to last a very long time and dont seem to be moving at all. this sounds close to what you saw also except you said it seemed to be rising. i noticed that when planes use flares to divert heat seaking missiles its not just one flare but about 4 or 5 in a row and they only last a few seconds. i hope you arent planning a trip tomorrow as weather seems to be bad and they are predicting snow in the upper elevations.
