They use to let you on the lakebed before. I don't believe they open the base to the public now. I saw Discovery STS-128 land September 11, 2009. I parked at: 35° 0.116'N, 117° 45.690'W. That's the off ramp of CA Highway 58 and 20 Mule Team Rd.

The Orbiter came in over our heads from the west heading east. Then made a 180 degree turn lined up with the VOR and landed on Runway 22. When you hear the double sonic boom, look directly up and slightly to the west and you will see it. Although I hear it will be coming down from the north over Fresno if Edwards gets called up. I'll do a rain dance for you so Florida gets socked in! Good Luck!
