I think it's important for non-pilots to understand that center and approach radar are designed to pick up aircraft that are enroute and landing at airports. It isn't designed to see aircraft "on the deck" at a distance. They would surely lose you in the valley as they indicated. This is a totally different bird than the surveillance radar at sensitive bases. If you can see the base, there is no doubt they can see you. Of note is the fact that the radar that picked up my two mylar balloons was 30 year old technology.
