To answer my own question, I don't think it is worth it for our purposes. Even if you could catch a jet in flight with high zoom, it would be impossible to track it. Let alone the fact that the auto-focus would have a very hard time focusing on a small spec in the sky. And if nothing is flying, the most exciting thing to see is a coyote or jack rabbit. To answer another question in this thread, I don't think the base would care. Because... see above.
