Watertown Airstrip was the official designation from about 1956 to June 1958. It was then officially designated Area 51 and appeared as such in numerous documents and maps. Watertown is apparently still listed as a member of Alamo Township in Lincoln County.

When the Air Force took over in 1979, the term Area 51 was dropped in favor of the operating location designator, Detachment 3, Air Force Flight Test Center (DET 3, AFFTC). Some people will argue that this is the name of the operating unit rather than the operating location, but it may be used interchangeably for all practical purposes.
