During the 1950s, Watertown Airstrip was patrolled by CIA security men wearing khakis and garrison caps. In the 1960s and early 1970s, the CIA guards continued to wear the khaki uniform but added a metal AREA 51 SECURITY FORCE badge. Documents show that funding was authorized to provide pith helmets for protection from the desert sun.

Since the Air Force took over responsibility for the Groom Lake facility in the late 1970s, the Det. 3, AFFTC, Security Police (now Security Forces Squadron) has consisted of USAF and contractor security guards. In the early 1990s, they were driving tan Ford Broncos and wearing the so-called "chocolate chip" style desert camouflage uniforms with no insignia. By the mid 1990s the "Cammo Dudes" were driving white Jeep Cherokees and wearing three-tone desert BDUs.

Interestingly, at least some of the tan Broncos later ended up with the EG&G security guards at Kennedy Space Center, Florida.
