I would assume that in the very early days the perimeter was patrolled by AF Police. I am not sure when private contractors took over. Perhaps Pete knows more on that?
I believe in the early 90's they used to drive tan Broncos. I hear they were much more aggressively discouraging people from being in the area before the closure of White Sides and Freedom Ridge in 1995. In those days cameras would sometimes be confiscated, or at least the film removed.
Even further back, before the land grab in 1984, when one could still drive up to the north end of Groom Lake, they even flat out lied to visitors, claiming they were trespassing when they were still very much on public land. But who would really be in the mood to have that discussion out there when facing several armed guards...
