The SOFIA is undergoing checkout flights that involve opening and closing the telescope door. It is the largest opening attempted on a flying aircraft, even bigger than the one on the Missile Defense Agency's DC-10 Widebody Airborne Sensor Platform (WASP). The SOFIA aircraft is based at Site 9 in Palmdale.
