Janet Flights are IFR, not VFR

As a pilot, I want to gently correct a few things in the above post: "uncontrolled airports" often have IFR approaches. It is correct to say that a pilot flying to an airport without any IAP (Instrument Approach Procedure) might launch IFR to a nearby airport and hope that the real destination is in VMC.

Groom Lake is not an uncontrolled airport. It is a controlled airport (with a tower) and IAPs. The JANET flights are all flying IFR, as do all airliner operations. When they land using "Visual Approach" they are still flying under IFR rules, controlled all the way. IFR is important because it ensures that a controller is separating the JANET flight from other traffic.

This may be exactly what gordy was trying to say, just wanted to clarify it...
