Since the saucers don't require a lot of power to start, thanks to element 115, there must be a different reason for the power lines. I hear one of the reasons is to get power to the GL Rd Guard Shack. It gets its power from a generator right now. But it would seem easier to run power lines to it from the base, rather than across Tikaboo Valley.

The power lines to Rachel have a limited capacity. If demand was the issue, it may be cheaper to upgrade the existing lines, than to run a new line from a limited capacity source. OTOH, it would make the base less dependent on the existing line from the NTS. It could also be a political issue, or simple economics. Lincoln Power, who operates the lines to Rachel, has quite competitive rates...
