Metal tags on Joshua Trees just west of Highway 375

Wondering anyone knows the source of or purpose for the metal tags I observed on some of the Joshua Trees in the desert west of highway 375? They are silver metalic, and just a bit larger than the fortune in a fortune cookie. I've posted photos with my Trip Report for November 10-11 (not sure how to upload one with this posting.)

One reads "TV 302," Others, if I remember correctly were "TV 307," and TV "309." There may have been more in the area, but after taking photos of 4 or 5 of them, I returned to my car.

I thought they might have marked locations for some of the recent history channel TV shows in the area. Joerg suggested it might be some sort of tagging for studying the Joshua Trees, or related to the recent road work in the area.

Anyone have any ideas? Or know for certain what they're there for?

Joe
