Clarification of my previous post: One interesting note is that when I did my panorama of A51 18 months ago with my 5 inch 2000mm scope I believe I was already well passed the useful focal length range for A51 for that particulat above average day. I could have gotten just as detailed of a panorama with a 1400mm. In other words extra magnification was buying me a more zoomed in image that was getting progressively blurrier but not more detailed. Of course Joerg and others who have photographed the peak might have different experiences.
When I mentioned 3000mm, 1800mm, and 2000mm telescopes in the last half of the post I was referring to focal length not mirror diameter. Also, by "larger digital image" I don't mean the full image size but the feature size. In other words objects like buildings would have larger pixel dimensions but without added detail.
