In the past, while driving east toward Edwards Air Force Base, I have seen similar phenomena in the predawn sky. Sometimes they looked quite spectacular and truly exotic. Upon further observation, however, it became apparent that they were high-altitude airliner contrails. Perhaps this explains the recent sighting.
