I'm not going to call the man a liar, particularly since he's no longer here to defend himself. But I have trouble getting past some blatant discrepancies in his story. One example -- he described leaving behind some of his gear to lighten his load as the rigors of the trip wore him down. He specifically mentioned that one item he left behind was his binoculars. Then, later on, he talks about using those binoculars (that he no longer had) to observe a building in the distance.

There are several more discrepancies of a similar nature in the story.
