The primary purpose for the test area is to gather information during the test of unknown technologies.
The very name "test" tells you that they don't know or fully understand the results of such testing.
That's why it's located in such a remote inhospitable place.
With that in mind, you should be wherry to expose your self to the multitudes of harm that can come to your person by exposures of the materials used out there.
It's a proven fact that they themselves do not know of the results of exposures and they do not have the time nor resources to battle it out in court.
You can look at it this way, the security personnel are there to protect you.
Your efforts are better spent trying to visually see what you can see from your distant vantage point. Gain advantage over distance by height.
