I've heard the exact same things about SPOT from others. It needs a clear view of the sky and there is no way to know if a message got through. It is definitely better than having nothing.

I solved the problem by buying a Sat phone. They are not that expensive when you figure the annual fees a Spot charges and it is a one time only purchase. I got the Sat phone company to waive all monthly charges as I told them I only needed it for emergency use and would pay as I used it. Sure it's $1 a minute with that plan but I've had it for a while and only used it once. My ATV quit in the middle of nowhere and out of cell phone range.
With a Spot you either send a message you have a full blown emergency or a little emergency or your ok. So it does not give any info on what kind of help you need. I was able to call for my ATV and myself to be picked up and knew that help was on the way.

Just thought I'd let you know what else is available out there.
