I take it that Mach became the chosen speed signifier since it has more to do with drag than with actual speed? Which makes sense, since the determining factor on speed was whether or not friction/drag was heating up the frame... Or is this "mach" at a fixed altitude we're talking about? (In case this confuses the heck out of anyone, the actual mach speed changes depending on how much atmosphere there is, since the speed of sound slows as you get closer to a vacuum)
