I spent a week at Lake Mead Base (Nellis Area 2) in 1981 when I was with Civil Air Patrol. We stayed in the barracks, ate at the chow hall, and used various other facilities. We shared space with the Red Horse civil engineers.

While I was there, I saw a TransAmerica C-130 land on the main Nellis runway. The cargo, five white drums, was offloaded onto a flatbed truck and driven to the Weapons Storage Complex at Area 2. It was escorted by a heavily armed convoy that included armored vehicles with flashing blue lights and .50-caliber machine guns. I'd say it's a safe bet that those drums contained nuclear warheads or some sort.
