The cameras at the north gate are still active, though that may be so the cammo dudes can hide yet still observe the situation outside and/or watch their steak burn on the BBQ.

One possibility is they have hard wired the cameras at the front gate.

The situation with the road sensors is different in that they were on public land, while the cameras were on the land run by the operation near Groom Lake.

I haven't been visited by the cammo dudes at every border road, but in general you are right that they seem to show up out of no where.
