The commanding officer of the Groom Lake facility (Det. 3, AFFTC) is a wing commander with a grade of O-6 (colonel). He reports to the commander of the Air Force Flight Test Center who, in turn, reports to the commander of Air Force Materiel Command. Det. 3, AFFTC, is organized under the objective wing structure established by Gen. Merrill McPeak in the early 1990s.
