OT- Space Shuttle ferry flight

This morning I watched technicians prepare the space shuttle Atlantis for its ferry flight to Kennedy Space Center, Florida. The tail cone is being installed and the orbiter will soon be raised into position for mating to the 747 Shuttle Carrier Aircraft.

For those in southern California (and who like to get up early), the SCA and orbiter are currently scheduled to depart Edwards at 5:30 a.m. on Sunday morning if all goes smoothly with the mating process and the weather holds out. The prevailing winds usually dictate a takeoff to the southwest but if the winds are calm, the crew may elect to depart to the northeast, over the dry lakebed. In the latter event, the highways and roads near the town of Boron are good viewing areas.
