Whatever "it" is, it must be pretty spectacular. If its been seen by civilians all over the country, then it must be viewed/serviced by servicemen all over the country as well. Getting them all to keep their mouths shut is no easy task. Whatever this thing is, it has to be spectacularly interesting in order to generate the kind of secrecy level that would keep thousands of servicemen quiet.
