The story behind the A-12, YF-12A, and SR-71 is long and involes unique characteristics between all 3 aircraft based on the same airframe. The A-12 was operated by the CIA under the code name OXCART and considered more capable for it's mission profile than the SR-71 which was flown by the AIR-FORCE.
