Sounds like you were in a good place to view the base. You would have the Groom Range to the left and Chalk Mountain to the right. The base would be behind a lower ridge in front of you, which runs roughly parallel to the Valley Road (or North Gate Road).

Hard to say what it was, but it does not sound like typical Red Flag acrivity. The only thing I can think of would be a S&R mission involving a helicopter, as Andre suggested. But the area between you and Groom would be a very unusual place for that.

Another explanation would be several aircraft taking off from Groom. If they take off on Rwy 32 you might see the landing lights after takeoff. Typically they would be turned off right after takeoff, though. Plus, you would have most likely heard jet engine noise. Did you hear any sound at all?
