In 1962 my family stopped at Elsworth AFB SD to stay overnight with friends who lived on base. My Dad was an officer so we had the proper credentials to get on base. Boy were we surprised when the next morning, a Saturday, we were awoken by the sounds of sirens and B52s taking off in large numbers. There was a practice Alert and we were not allowed to even go outside the Quarters we were staying in. Our host explained that if you were seen outside the Air Police would detain you until an ambulance arrived which would take you to the Base Hospital where you would be treated(mock) for radiation burns/poisoning. Very, VERY REAL simulation....Got my attention!
