The closest view spot to Area 51 on public is nearly 26 miles away. You loose a lot of contrast when you take photos through 26 miles of air. To get an idea of the challenge that poses, drive up to an elevated place near your home and try to take photos of something 26 miles away.
The panoramas on this web site, particularly Paul Wilson's 2008 panorama, are the best results possible, and the best recent photos of Area 51, with the exception of satellite images. Satellites look at the base from above, and only have to deal with roughly 7 miles of dense atmosphere.
