It is more like $350 billion, not $150 billion. What's the point of spending $350 billion on a system that most scientists think can be defeated? The US is not giving up MAD, so we still have a deterent even if Bush does cut our nuke warhead inventory in half. [Another annoucement you heard but then seemed to go away, not that it is a bad idea since we have more weapons than targets by a factor of at least 4. Reportedly the US has 10k of nuclear bombs, which probably means the real number is 15k. Quick, name 1000 targets. The only thing annoying about the current plan is that it is unilateral.] Reducing the nuke arsenal is supposed to save money, allowing part of star wars to be funded.

The Democrats now control the senate and have set up the agenda where the DOD spending will be voted on last. Nobody wants to see red ink in the budget, which will be the case if Star Wars II goes forward. It would be political suicide. Expect the debate to go on until after the 2002 elections. If the GOP can hold either branch (house or senate) at that point, then Star Wars will start moving. If they lose them both (very likely), Star Wars is dead in the water. The conventional programs F22, JSF will most likely be continued.
