Whattya know. Looked at the image on Google Earth, and it really really does look like a net in perspective from above. I don't know much about the plausibility otherwise, but it certainly looks like what you're saying, to me. At least something net-like suspended. It looks pretty incredibly tall. Definitely not the same material as the aircraft carrier stuff, but looks like a net nonetheless. Also visible on the DLR jul 07 image as well.
