I should mention that, in order to get similar results, you definitely don't need an image stabilized lens (the stabilizer was off). Anything faster than 1/120s or so should give you a pretty solid image, even from a vibrating plane. I was getting around 1/500s-1/1000s at f/13, shooting ISO 100. Even stopped it down a few stops to make sure all of the desert floor was in the image, even the very bright parts.

It probably did help, however, that the glass elements in that particular lens are multicoated (preventing internal glare), and that the main glass element is very large, which helps get through the haze. Didn't need the f/2.8 capability here!
